Henk Van Cauwenbergh
Photographer Henk van Cauwenbergh born in Antwerp and grew up at the Belgian Coast, studied Press and Communication sciences at VUB Brussels and mastered at Ecole des Beaux- Art in Paris. His meeting and collaboration with iconic photographer Peter Lindbergh was definable for his further career.
In 1996 he opened his studio The Loft Fashion Factory. Since then he is recognized internationally. He loves to make photos that tell a story.
In 2006 he produced his first large format book, Le Matin. Portraits during the morning ritual of 100 ladies with 19 different nationalities.
In 2010 he realized a second masterpiece Rencontre. It’s a visual tribute to Jean-Baptiste Jalabert – the famous French matador- & Francesca Dolci- a prima ballerina of The Royal Ballet of Monte Carlo.
Since 2014 internationally acclaimed Belgian photographer Henk van Cauwenbergh has been crisscrossing Europe armed with his camera and an address book full of attractive places to be and to be seen. The result of these city trips is an enthralling series of beautiful coffee table books showcasing the best and most daring venues for fine dining, sipping cocktails or partying. These magnificent, large format editions, with their recognizable luxurious black and gold cover design, make the perfect gift book and quickly became collector’s items for anyone appreciating photography and the allure of Europe’s old cities. The images gracing the pages of each volume capture the essence of every city and are counteracted with some stylish, sometimes witty, shots of every city’s most iconic spots and vistas.
Les Brasseries de Paris (2014) takes the reader on a tour of the most famous and fabulous brasseries of Paris. No haphazard selection, but the favourite addresses of icons of French cultural life such as Charles Aznavour (singer, actor and writer), Irène Silvagni (editor of Vogue Paris), Omar Sy (actor and best remembered for his film Intouchables), Chico Bouchikhi (founder of the Gipsy Kings)… all of whom have lent their cooperation to this unique project. They take you to cherished places: Brasserie Lipp, Café Costes, La Closerie des Lilas, Au Pied de Cochon, Café des Deux Magots and many others… And of course these celebrities also make their appearance in the photo selection. Every brasserie is extensively documented, with special attention to their authenticity and the details that characterize the atmosphere of the space. Les Brasseries de Paris is unmistakably a visual love letter to the City of Light.
From Paris it went to London in 2015. Exquisite Venues of London captures the essence of London’s buzzing clubscene and the city’s most iconic nightlife venues. Whether one is after a hardcore night out, wants to pull an all-weekend dance rave or is on the lookout for something more laid back away from the neonglow and glitterballs, London city will never disappoint. This is the most avant-garde book in the series with snippets of London and its unique character – sometimes stubborn, sometimes quirky but always extraordinary – reflected through the eyes of the artist.
After capturing the delights of Paris and London, Henk van Cauwenbergh made his tour around Amsterdam. Amazing Flavours of Amsterdam (2016) takes us to this young, zesty and colourful city where there is something fantastic for everyone and something new and happening around every corner. In a city as liberal and eclectic as Amsterdam, there is an almost endless stream of new and daring places to eat, dine and party. From cosy and cosmopolitan after-work drinking places and casual gathering spots to delectable Michelin star-rated cuisine and all night party places. Henk van Cauwenbergh approaches the sensuality and mystery of it all and manages to catch it in images that reveal much more than words can do.
Earlier this year Henk van Cauwenbergh returned home and turned his lens to one of Belgium’s most beautiful cities; his cherished home town of Antwerp. Antwerp is a city that does not follow trends, but sets them – according to the photographer. In addition to the illustrious places to wine and dine, there are many new and hidden places to discover in Wonderful Antwerp. Combined with images of the rich historical heritage and other popular attractions such as the MAS, the Zoo, the Central Station, the Cathedral and Port of Antwerp, this book has become an impressive photographic anthology of a treasured city.
And the photographer’s grand tour of the world’s most interesting places goes on. More exciting cities are coming soon. Next editions will feature the best of Barcelona and cover hip and happening Berlin. And there’s more, the scoop of the books will possibly broaden to feature dreamdestinations and exhilariting places all around the globe. Explore big city life in New York, get a taste of sophisticated Buenos Aires, embrace the the warmth of design filled Kopenhagen or peek inside Dubai’s most exclusive places… the possibilities are endless.
